Hailing from Port Arthur, TX, Candace Queen is an art director and designer based in Chicago, IL, with a vivacious entrepreneurial spirit. Passionate about all things Trill, Chopped and Screwed, her work and work ethic reflects her roots in Southeast Texas, as well as her love for exploring new technology and hacking culture codes.

In 2015 she completed her thesis, “The Value of Multicultural Marketing: Increasing Sustainable Behaviors Among African-Americans with Market Segmentation,” while pursuing a Masters’ degree in advertising at the University of Texas. After graduate school, Candace moved to the Windy City to take on an art director role at DigitasLBi, a job she secured through the 4A's Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP). At DigitasLBi she worked on a range of brands including Sprint, Miller Lite, Glidden, BP, and TransUnion. After DigitasLBi, she launched her own creative studio, meroë & co. In addition to her design and art work, she runs Hansberry Group, a boutique consultancy that drives impact within the Black community through branding and design. Under the Hansberry Group umbrella, Blacks in Advertising was formed, a collective that focuses on amplifying the voices of Black professionals in the advertising and media industries.

Over the course of her career, Candace has been recognized by the 4A’s as one of the 100 People That Make Advertising Great, a 2017 4A’s MAIPer to Watch, 2015 Bill Sharp Award Recipient, and 2014 ADCOLOR FUTURE. Hansberry Group is an activist agency, cultivating impact, preserving legacies, and inciting change within the Black Community, through branding and design. Our mission is to provide quality branding, strategy, and design services to cause-based organizations and individuals who are dedicated to making an impact among multicultural communities of the African Diaspora.

This project began as a visual anthology of Blacks in Advertising who paved the way for a more diverse industry, inclusive of all cultures. Since our initial Black History Month campaign, we've received an immense amount of interest and offerings of support to evolve the campaign into a full platform, filled with resources and opportunities to continue sharing narratives and perspectives of Blacks in the ad industry. The beta website is set to launch at the end of January 2017, with a full website launching in February 2018.

meroë & co emerged as I began receiving freelance design projects. I wanted an outlet, separate from my main portfolio, to blog about my process, share advice for growing creatives, and share my independent projects and art work.
